Onondaga County Public Libraries
A Cornerstone of Community and Learning in Syracuse.
The Onondaga County Public Libraries (OCPL) system serves as the primary public library network for Onondaga County, New York,
encompassing the city of Syracuse and surrounding areas. What many residents still refer to as the “Syracuse Public Library” is now
fully integrated into OCPL, following a 1976 merger between the former Syracuse Public Library and the Onondaga Library System.
This consolidation created a unified, county-wide network that today operates 32 branches, including the flagship Central Library in
downtown Syracuse, eight additional city branches, satellite locations, and numerous suburban member libraries.
The Central Library: Downtown Syracuse’s Hub
Located at 447 South Salina Street in the Galleries of Syracuse, the Central Library (often called the Robert P. Kinchen Central Library)
stands as the system’s flagship. This modern facility offers far more than traditional books—it functions as a dynamic community space
with specialized features:
• MakerSpace → equipped for creative projects, music production, art, and technology
• KidSpace → a vibrant children’s area with interactive learning and programs
• Special Technologies & Adaptive Resources (STAR) Lab → providing assistive tools for patrons with disabilities
• Local History & Genealogy Department → a nationally recognized repository for Central New York research
• Laptop labs, interlibrary loans, and adaptive technology access
The library hosts popular ongoing programs such as the Friends of the Central Library Author Series, Read to a
Therapy Dog sessions, summer reading challenges, and creative workshops.
A County-Wide Network
Beyond downtown, OCPL includes Syracuse city branches like Beauchamp, Betts, Hazard, Mundy, Paine, Petit, Soule,
and White, plus suburban libraries in communities such as Baldwinsville, Fayetteville, Liverpool, Manlius, Skaneateles, and others.
All locations provide free access to physical and digital collections (via OverDrive/Libby), online learning platforms, career
resources, adult literacy/ESL support, and community events.
With a single library card, residents can access millions of items across the system, making OCPL an essential
resource for education, workforce development, and cultural enrichment throughout Onondaga County.
Whether you’re researching family history, helping a child discover reading, or exploring new skills in a makerspace,
the Onondaga County Public Libraries—rooted in Syracuse’s historic public library tradition—continue to evolve as inclusive, innovative
spaces for all. Visit onlib.org to get a card or explore upcoming events.
