The Iconic State Park Gorge Walks
Watkins Glen State Park
Location: 1009 N Franklin St, Watkins Glen, NY 14891
Highlights: 19 Waterfalls, Cavern Cascade, & Hand-Cut Stone Paths
The crown jewel of NY gorge trails. The two-mile path winds through a narrow, ethereal canyon where water wraps around and beneath you. Highlights include walking directly behind the rushing curtain of Cavern Cascade and under the iconic Rainbow Falls bridge.
π‘ Insider Tip: This trail is heavily trafficked. To secure parking at the main entrance and avoid single-file walking lines on the narrow stone staircases, arrive by 8:30 AM on weekends.
Taughannock Falls State Park
Location: 2221 Taughannock Park Rd, Trumansburg, NY 14886
Highlights: 215-Foot Sheer Plunge Waterfall & Flat, Accessible Canyon Path
Boasting a vertical drop that is a full three stories higher than Niagara Falls, Taughannock is a spectacular single-plunge cascade that crashes down into a massive amphitheatrical rock bowl. Unlike other area gorges, the main lower trail here is flat, wide, and highly accessible.
π‘ Insider Tip: For an easy, zero-hiking view, drive up to the Falls Overlook off Taughannock Park Road. There is a stone viewing platform right next to the parking lot.
Robert H. Treman State Park
Location: 105 Enfield Falls Rd, Ithaca, NY 14850
Highlights: Lucifer Falls, Rugged Stone Switching Paths, & Stream-Fed Swimming Pool
A wilder, deeply forested canyon adventure located just outside Ithaca. The Gorge Trail climbs alongside the multi-tiered, cascading mass of Lucifer Falls (115 feet) via dramatic, historic CCC-carved stone steps that trace the rock edge.
π‘ Insider Tip: The lower park area features a unique, natural stream-fed swimming pool right beneath a diving platform at Enfield Falls. Perfect for a post-hike summer cool down.
Buttermilk Falls State Park
Location: 112 E Buttermilk Falls Rd, Ithaca, NY 14850
Highlights: Foaming Cascading Base Drop & Shaded Glen Pot-Holes
Named for the frothy, creamy appearance of its waters tumbling over tiered rock layers. The main waterfall greets you directly at the lower parking lot entrance. The trail itself climbs steeply upward alongside a series of natural stone pools and small flumes.
π‘ Insider Tip: If you want to avoid the steep vertical climb up the stairs from the bottom, park at the Upper Entrance lot instead and hike down into the peaceful, shady glens.
